School-Based Programs Overview
School Based Programs support working families by offering before- and after-school child care and half-day kindergarten to over 1,000 children. These programs, hosted in Radnor, Haverford, and Penn Delco School Districts., are mission-specific, revenue producing programs that help to support our services for urban, low-income families otherwise not funded by government contracts. The school-based program curriculum was designed to help children reach developmental benchmarks & the schedule coincides with the school district’s calendar. This curriculum focuses on providing a well-rounded educational program where children are safe, happy, and developing new skills daily.
The before-school program prepares children for a full day of learning through active engagement in activities prior to beginning their school day. Kindergarten-aged children attend the Kindergarten Enrichment Program that compliments & enhances the local school district’s curriculum. This program builds upon the skills children develop in the kindergarten classroom by reinforcing those skills during fun, educational activities developed by certified teachers.
The after-school program has grown rapidly, hosting a growing number of students and families each year. Supervised by a team of certified teachers, children receive homework assistance and participate in extracurricular activities including karate, yoga and sports activities.
In addition to these programs, the School-based programs have partnered with The Village and Haverford Township to offer two summer camp programs for children. These programs work to enrich the lives of families in the Delaware County. In FY15, FSS opened a new preschool program, Brookline Academy that provides an educational foundation & focuses on kindergarten readiness.
FSS offers a morning or afternoon extended day kindergarten program for Kindergarten children that complements Haverford School District curricula and schedules. There are two certified and experienced teachers in each extended day kindergarten class. We use a “learning center” approach that allows children to explore a theme through teacher-designed centers which may focus on math, science, art, or writing. Children will move from center to center during the day, encouraging the development of independence, self-motivation and curiosity. Some of the topics covered have included world geography and culture, science units such as weather, physics and nature and reading and writing activities.
Before and After School Programs for children Kindergarten-5th grade
Children attending the Before and After School programs participate in arts and crafts, free play, sports, supervised activities, outdoor play and a supervised homework period. Over the years we have developed a homework policy that we think makes life a little easier at home and in class. Click here to download our homework policy.
